Rio Tinto Procurement is a dynamic and professional procurement organization; set up to meet the needs of Rio Tinto's business units. We source and enter into contractual relationships over a large range of goods and services, specializing in mining-specific categories. We source electronically as much as possible via auction and RFx, and transact using the Quadrem electronic marketplace.
Context
Rio Tinto Procurement's primary purpose is to deliver value by providing safe, efficient and effective procurement and in-bound supply chain services to the Rio Tinto Group businesses and functional operations. Value is achieved through the establishment or improvement of competitive supply markets for the purchase of goods and services. Value is enabled by highly capable people applying uniform processes and e-technologies resulting in continuous supply chain improvement, enhanced corporate social responsibility and measurable savings for Rio Tinto.
The Primary Purpose of Operations is to focus on end to end supply chain improvements and process co-ordination between three core areas that make up Operations:
Source: RTP develops and executes sourcing strategies for goods and services and manages supplier relationships on behalf
of, and in consultation with, business unit customers.
Buy: RTP maintains vendor and materials data, creates purchase orders for goods, services and repairable items, expedites
deliveries where required and seeks to achieve high levels of automation through this process.
Deliver: RTP manages the inbound freight, warehousing and inventory management processes on behalf of Rio Tinto business units and optimises the associated logistics processes.
Overlaid on RTP's service lines is its Service Delivery model, which serves to provide the necessary cohesion to effectively and efficiently deliver RTP's full range of inbound supply chain services in line with Business Unit client needs and expectations.
Primary Purpose
This role is responsible for the analysis, negotiation and control of the inland freight cost, public warehousing and coordination of land transportation of all inbound and outbound chemicals, carbon products and rod aluminum and the freight payment process.
Accountabilities
Responsible for the management and leadership of employees which includes the performance assessment, development, succession planning, motivating, coaching and training of these employees.
Responsible for providing a positive, safe and ethical working environment and learning culture for employees.
Ensure all Rio Tinto Procurement, Rio Tinto Group and applicable site policies are followed.
Establish positive working relationships and proactively ensure the effective delivery of all agreed to services to internal and external customers.
Establish good working relationships with transportation carriers such as railway, trucking firms, warehouses, transportation departments and industry related associations.
Provide expertise in matters of rail and highway pricing, service and reporting of loss or damage by business units. Develop and implement methods to minimize transportation costs while securing service levels that meet customer expectations.
Ensure that suppliers are in compliance with U.S. and Canadian government regulations and Rio Tinto standards.
Secure and manage fleets of railway assigned specialized cars to ensure timely movement of supplies and products.
Develop and maintain transportation cost reporting system for increased management control and provides data to key stakeholders as needed.
Promote and keep abreast of regulatory transportation reform and changes in technology to protect company interests.

Internal / External Impacts
This position has a direct impact to RTP and to the external business unit and products groups they support through the quality and accuracy of the work performed. This role has the authority to negotiate general modal transportation requirement contracts up to $60 million, specific routing requirement contracts up to $5 million and an individual approval level of $50,000.
Education & Qualifications
Education/Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent education/experience required
10 years experience in various supply chain, transportation and/or logistics positions
Bachelors Degree or equivalent education/experience in logistics, supply chain or related discipline is highly preferred
Canadian Institute of Traffic and Transportation certification (CITT) highly preferred
Experience in mining, aluminum smelting, oil and gas, or heavy industry preferred
Knowledge:
Knowledge and understanding of procurement and supply chain best practices required
Knowledge of contract law preferred
Skills/Abilities/Technical Competencies:
Fluency in English is required depending on assigned business unit(s) and/or base work location
Fluency in Spanish, French, and/or Portuguese is preferred depending on assigned business unit(s) and/or base work location
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Strong analytical and problem solving skills
Computer literate and proficiency with common word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and database software
